May 30, 2013 by mattfradd

A recent commercial produced by AussieMite, depicts a young woman desecrating the Eucharist:

This is bloody appalling!

Let AussieMite know what you think of their blatant disrespect of Catholic teaching by sharing this post, AND writing on their facebook wall.

You can also email them:hello@AussieMite.com.au and Tweet them

Be polite, but firm. Tell them to apologize, and that you will never buy their product again.

  1. The problem is that they’ve said one reason they created it in the first place is because they knew it would cause a fuss. The fuss is part of their marketing scheme, so its a catch 22 to promote a boycott of them.

    • Emilie Martin says:

We need to give them a fuss that they didn’t anticipate. Really, if this decreases their sales and creates a bad image for them, then maybe they should have thought twice before airing it.

    • Rita says:

No sweetie, if noone is buying their product as a result its no catch 22. Especially when we are contacting the major sellers (Coles and Woolworths) and putting in our complaints as well as the fact that 61% of Australians are Christian. God Bless

      • It is likely that the percentage of practicing Catholics or those who really care enough to boycott is probably fairly small. For those who are offended, there will be others who support it that much more because of their disdain for Catholics (especially with the current investigations occurring in Australia) as well as the Aussies who like this kind of humor. I think you’re on the right track with contacting sellers though. To truly make a point and have a negative impact, I believe that all companies that associate themselves with AussieMite, whether by selling or adverting, need to be boycotted.

    • mattfradd says:

I suspect you’re probably right, Catherine. Thanks for your input.

    • Benita says:

I think you are absolutely right Catherine. The film maker has said he hopes it goes viral. And this negative publicity will definitely help. They are receiving more media coverage now than they ever would have previously.
The reality is that they are small fry on the market, they need this publicity. Even though it is negative, it will help with brand recognition in supermarkets.
I’ve decided not to share it around, so as to not increase the exposure they are receiving.

  2. Their advertisement violates Section 2, Point 1 under the AANA (Australian Association of National Advertisers) Code of Ethics.
Those that live in Australia should lodge a complaint with the AANA here: http://www.adstandards.com.au/advertisingstandards/codesweadminister

    • Bronwyn says:

Thanks for that, didn’t realise we could complain in that way. I have just sent in a complaint using that channel, and according to the AANA website, an investigation will be launched since just one complaint is enough for this to happen. Hopefully it does some good.

  3. James Battle says:

The fact that they do not understand how offensive this is to Catholics only shows their ignorance. Ignorance is not to be ashamed of as long as it remains a temporary state.

AussieMite’s reaction to the outrage, however, seems to do nothing but confirm their intent to be offensive.

Being an anti-Catholic bigot still makes one a bigot. The fact that it is a popular time to be an anti-Catholic bigot doesn’t make one any less of a bigot.

“Oh, calm down! It was just a joke!” Is exactly what a bully says when he wants to remain insensitive, intolerant, and the center of attention at someone else’s expense.

  4. Donna says:

Do they NOT realize, the ramifications, for themselves, when they are standing before God!! Stupid Stupid people!!

  5. Bob says:

And take a look at their latest facebook post. They’re trying to justify their bigotry by bringing up the sexual abuse crisis. So now it is OK to be bigoted because some priests were doing wrong things. They are doubling down.

  6. Tom says:

Not for nothing, but Im sure if this was an attack on Islam or Judaism it would worldwide news and their would be public outrage and an immediate apology from Aussie-mite, it’s about time Catholics stood up, stopped showing these people the other Cheek. I don’t even like their product, but in the future If I ever did i would be sure to choose Vegemite.

    • Tony says:

Too true Tom. Advertisers seem too think the Catholic Faith is fair game, maybe because we don’t kick up a fuss every time we are ridiculed.

  7. Mahir Murad says:

“Hello, I have just seen the disgusting video that a friend posted on facebook by aussiemite. I would just like to let you know, as a Catholic I am boycotting your products and will make sure my friends from do the same.

May Jesus Christ our Lord, God and Judge have mercy on the people who made this advertisement! Amen.”

  8. Anthony says:

well said tom! its about time catholics stood up! we are heading in a world of atheism and antichrist!

  9. Graham says:

I’m no expert but in one way or another, isn’t the Eucharist a symbol of Christ for all Christians?; something most, if not all the Christian faiths have in common? So if this ad is indeed offensive, shouldn’t it be offensive to all Christians??? That the setting for the ad appears to be in a Catholic church s surely but a detail? I think Australia’s Christians should show a little unity.

This Must be REMOVED Immediately!!!! Holy Communion isn’t received for its taste, its received to be one with GOD!!! How Inaccurate, thoughtless, un empathetic and utterly careless from the creators of this stupid add. If anyone in the Marketing department had done some simple research they would have discovered just how offensive this is, not only to Catholics but to all Christians and people of other faiths. As it sends a false message that its ok to ridicule religious beliefs and customs. If only they knew its true meaning, they wouldn’t for 1 second contemplate this a a possible way to market their product. Says a lot about the company and its marketers……..

  12. Domenic says:

This is a disgrace, whoever sells this item, I will not ship there and take my business elsewhere.

  14. Michael says:

I am really offended by this. I will not buy your products and I will actively encourage others not to either unless you apologise and remove this. I just pray God shows mercy to your souls…

  15. patty says:

    Pathetic.

  16. patrick says:

Have you checked the facebook page Goodbye Aussiemite?

  17. Rose says:

    Hello Matt,
I got this from another Matthew on how faithful Australians can fight this. He said, “their use of “sacrilicious” indicate that they knew the action would be seen as sacriligious and therefore offensiveness. They likely assumed that the offense would create controversy that they could manipulate to their favor, rather than “real” controversy.

Their advertisement violates Section 2, Point 1 under the AANA (Australian Association of National Advertisers) Code of Ethics

I don’t know where he got the info but it’s worth a try.

    • Rose says:

Whoops, I just realized he already posted above me. It’s ok to delete this and previous comment. Thanks!

  18. Elise Ramsey says:

    Dear Matt,

We sincerely apologise for any offence caused. It was never the intention to do so, but we recognise that for some it did.

We have listened to your comments and removed any and all instances of the campaign from our social media channels.

We are a small family-owned company looking to establish ourselves and a product we believe in and love.

We sincerely hope that this will not dissuade you from buying AussieMite in the future.

    Best wishes,
    Elise

  19. Andre says:

As long as we have a government that is more and more anti-Catholic and anti-God, and that hides under the pretext of “freedom of speech”, and as long as we have a population that has simply betrayed Christ and His great Sacrifice, I’m afraid that this will just continue getting worse and to be used as laughs and jokes. True Catholics are the minority, and since other Christian groups refuse to reunite with the Church, claiming we aren’t Christian… Well it’s hard to stand up to the powerful when its just a few against the majority. Oh God have pity on us, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

  20. […] Calling the ad “bloody appalling,” the Catholic blogger, Matt Fradd, has called for a boycott. […]

  21. Jeremy says:

I encourage all who see this Blasphemous ad to remember this important point. They have committed the highest form of Blasphemy which is worse than any other crime that a human can commit. Please pray for justice & mercy in this matter. Justice- so that Auzzie mite owners & others may know of the gravity of this crime and that God will be not mocked. Mercy- so that the poor sinners who made this ad may receive his mercy and not suffer eternal punishment. Remember how St Paul said in 1 Corinthians 5:5…”Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns.”

  22. Rachel says:

I can only hope they didnt understand the seriousness and didnt know what they were doing. A similar comedy sketch was (surprisingly enough) banned in the UK where someone spread chutney on the host. When it was shown in a documentary made by Anne Wydecombe it was shocking and hurtful to see but I really got the feeling the people who made the sketch didnt even have a clue what they were doing. Im not saying that excuses them at all. But I can only hope they didnt know what they were doing at the time and if they were to learn, please God, they’d be truely sorry.
